Main Character is a social app that turns the real things you do into manga. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with and the choices you have. "We" means the developer of Main Character, Kalvin B Harris. Contact: kalvinharrisit@gmail.com.
What we collect
Account: your email address and password. Passwords are handled by Google Firebase Authentication; we never store them ourselves.
Public profile: your public name, @username, bio and profile photo.
What you make: quests, categories and XP, story text, manga pages and posts, your hero file (pictures, stats, traits and quote), and the character reference photo you choose to use.
Activity: likes, follows, blocks, reports, feedback and notifications.
Connected assistants: if you connect ChatGPT or Claude, a record of the connection (stored as one-way hashes, not readable tokens) and the content your assistant sends to Main Character for you, such as a manga script, page images or a quest.
Purchases: if you subscribe to the Checkmark, the App Store transaction Apple signs for us: the product, transaction IDs, purchase and expiry dates, renewal status, refunds and the App Store environment. Apple handles payment; we never see your card or billing details.
Ads (free accounts only): Google AdMob, which shows the ads between stories in Discover, collects device and ad data through its software in the app: your device's advertising identifier (only if you allow tracking, see below), ad views and taps, approximate location derived from your IP address, and performance and diagnostic data. It is linked to your device, not to your Main Character account.
Technical data: IP address and request logs kept by our hosting provider for security and abuse prevention, and app settings stored on your device.
Crash reports: if the app crashes, Google Firebase Crashlytics sends us what went wrong in the app's code (a stack trace) with the device model, operating system and app version. Crash reports don't include your stories, posts or account details and aren't linked to your account. You can turn them off in Settings → About & support → "Send crash reports".
We do not collect your precise location, contacts or health data, and we never give advertisers your stories, quests, photos, posts or email address.
Ads and tracking
Free accounts see ads from Google AdMob between stories in Discover. There are no ads during sign-up, in the manga reader or on hero files, and Checkmark subscribers see none.
Before the first ad loads, the app shows Google's consent message where the law requires one, then Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you allow tracking, Google may use your device's advertising identifier to show ads based on your activity in other companies' apps and websites, and to measure them. That is the only tracking in Main Character; our own code and service never track you.
If you don't allow tracking, Google shows ads without the advertising identifier, using limited data such as approximate location and the ad itself.
You can change your choice at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, and, where Google's consent message applies, in Main Character's Settings → "Ad privacy choices".
We don't sell your personal data. Some US state laws call allowing an advertising partner to use your advertising identifier for personalized ads "sharing"; declining tracking, or the Checkmark, stops it.
How we use it
To run your account and show your posts, profile and hero file to the people you share them with.
To make manga and pictures for you with AI, and to keep quests, XP and notifications up to date.
To keep Main Character safe: reviewing reports, removing content that breaks our Terms of Use, suspending abusive accounts and preventing spam.
To enforce limits on how many stories Main Character draws for each account.
To provide the Checkmark you bought (no ads, unlimited pages and the badge) and keep it current with Apple.
To show ads to free accounts (Google AdMob, as described above).
AI processing
When Main Character writes or draws a story for you, your story text and your character reference are sent to OpenAI to generate it. OpenAI processes this data to provide the service under its API terms, which state that API data is not used to train its models by default.
When you use ChatGPT or Claude with Main Character, that assistant is run by OpenAI or Anthropic under their own privacy policies. Main Character receives only what your assistant sends through the connection. It never reads your other chats.
Who can see your content
Other people on Main Character see your public profile, the posts you publish and your hero file once you approve it. Your posting mode decides whether new posts are shared automatically (Autopilot) or wait for your approval (Review). Posts that show other real people always wait for your approval.
Service providers who host and run Main Character for us: Google Cloud and Firebase (hosting, database, file storage, sign-in and crash reports) and OpenAI (AI generation).
Apple, which sells and bills the Checkmark subscription through the App Store under its own privacy policy, and tells us when a subscription renews, ends or is refunded.
Google AdMob, our advertising partner for free accounts, as described in "Ads and tracking".
Authorities, when the law requires it or to protect people from harm.
How long we keep it
Deleted data may remain in encrypted backups for up to 7 days before it is permanently erased.
We keep your data while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete your account, profile, posts, pictures, quests and assistant connections. Server logs are kept for up to 30 days. Reports you sent about other accounts may be kept as long as needed to keep the service safe. Spending records keep cost totals without your account ID. App Store subscription records are kept as long as needed to provide and account for the subscription; deleting your account unlinks them from it (cancel the subscription itself in your Apple Account settings). Google keeps ad data under its own policy.
Your choices
Choose Autopilot or Review for your posts, hide your hero file and edit or remove your profile.
Allow or decline tracking (iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking) and change your ad consent in Settings → "Ad privacy choices" where it is shown.
Block people, and report posts or profiles from their "…" menu.
Disconnect ChatGPT or Claude at any time in Settings.
Delete your account and its data in Settings → "Delete this account and its stored data".
Main Character is for people 13 and older. It is not directed to children under 13, and we delete accounts we learn belong to a child under 13.
Security and where data is stored
Data is encrypted in transit, stored with Google Cloud in the United States and protected by access controls. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
Changes
We will update this page and the date above when this policy changes, and tell you in the app before material changes take effect.
